I started with a 1989 edition of The Stranger by Albert Camus, first published in 1942. I watched the 1967 film directed by Luchino Visconti with actor Marcello Mastroianni as protagonist Meursault and looked for compelling dramatic scenes. The first part of the story shows Meursault going about his life, devoid of emotions, but highly sensitized to the natural world. The second part takes place in an Algerian courtroom with Meursault is on trial for murder. While Meursault is awaiting his verdict, he acknowledges the futility of human wishes. Alice Kaplan’s excellent book, Looking for The Stranger, provides background to Camus’ writing of this novel and explains the origins and popularity of this story. The monotypes are printed with oil-based ink on the pages of the book. The monotype pages are glued on accordion folds and mounted to the original book cover. I repeated this process with another copy of the book. Both books have original book jackets.
